Living with Hiatal Hernia

Simple changes to get rid of most of the symptoms

  • Remove all acidic food from your diet - anything that tastes sour must go
  • Get a wedge pillow wich will prop up your upper body 15-20% degrees when sleeping. It will do magic to your nighttime heartburn
  • Completely stop alcohol consumption and smoking - hard one, isn't it ;)?
  • Change your diet to have more smaller meals rather than less larger ones
  • Eat light before you go to sleep and don't eat 3-4 hours before going to sleep
  • Exclude spicy food (there go chinese, japanese and indian restaurants...)
  • Loose weight if you're overweight
  • Reduce amount of caffeine you consume

This could sound like a lot of changes but it takes a lot of hard work to get rid of symptoms caused by hiatal hernia. There is a chance that all above won't help you right away. If this is a case you could resort to acid reducing drugs like PPIs, tums, etc. Your doctor will be able to recommend you best choice. But based on multiple opinions I heard on forums acid reducing drugs may stop working if you take them for extended period of time. That's why it is important to use them only as a help while working on a lifestyle changes above.
