I think I had heartburn and was aware about my hiatal hernia for at least 5 or 7 years. But I realized the severity of this condition only 3 years ago when it really started to affect my life. During that time I had lots of problems in my personal life and was completely stressed out. One day when I came from work and had my dinner I felt a choking sensation in my throat and pain in my chest. First I thought that I just chocked on food. But I was able to breathe even though I felt that something was choking me. Scared to death I went down to the street and spend 20 minutes just wondering there and trying to get over it (I have no idea why I done it - but that was my reaction). Well my condition didn't improve and I decided to go to the apartment management office and ask for help. They looked at my pale face and decided to immediately call 911.
It showed up 5 minutes later. They measured my blood pressure, took pulse and looked at my throat. Then I described my symptoms and that's when I heard word GERD first time in my life. Doc from 911 said that my symptoms were quite typical symptoms of this disease and they have at least couple calls like this every day. I was asked to relax and go to the doctor in the next several days. I didn't know that it was my acid reflux and hiatal hernia playing with me. After 911 left I felt myself more relaxed and choking sensation slowly began to dissipate. So I went home finished my dinner, watched some TV and went to sleep. But I wasn't able too. During the night I started to feel burning sensation in my chest which was so bad that sleeping was just impossible. This sensation got a little bit better when I stand up but even then it was very bad. I thought that this was just a reaction of my body to the stress and wasn't too worried about it. It turned out that it was just a first night of a series of sleepless "heartburn" nights. Next day I woke up with a strange sour taste in my mouth. It was pretty disgusting so I went to the bathroom and cleaned my teeth and tongue. It got better and I went to the kitchen to eat my breakfast. Well it turned out to be quite challenging. It felt like my throat became very sensitive to the food. Every single piece of food irritated it and made it painful to swallow. And right when I finished my meal I felt this burning sensation increasing to the level when it was very hard to ignore it. After that day I had a year of "try and see" experiments of all different remedies available out there. I'm quite good in search engines so I managed to discover every single piece of information on that subject in the internet and try it on myself. It was from just buying tons of different DGL remedies and doing acupuncture to trying stupid hiatal hernia treatment ideas (I even won't tell them to you because they can make your condition much worse). Now when I'm writing this paragraph it is more than 3 years since it all started. At this moment I have zero night time heartburn and I only remember word heartburn when I decide to go very far on acidic food. I cannot say that I completely cured heartburn but I'm in complete control of it. I know what can start it and what can stop it. I know if it will get really bad what to do and how to get rid of it in a matter of days. That is information I want to share with you.
